Guido Gentile is Professor of Transportation Engineering at DICEA - Sapienza University of Rome, where he teaches Transport Modeling and Planning. He is also director of Research & Innovation in SISTeMA srl; the company, co-founded in 2009 as university spin-off, is now part of the PTV Group, has more than 50 employees and is leader in software development for Intelligent Transport Systems.

He was born in 1971 in Rome, where he graduated cum laude as Civil Engineer in 1996. He obtained a Master in Corporate Finance at LUISS in 1996 and a PhD in Transport Engineering at Sapienza in 2000. He is enrolled in the Professional Engineering Association of Rome since 1996. He has the Italian National Scientific Habilitation (ASN) as Full Professor in Transportation Engineering (2012) and in Operation Research (2016).

His main fields of scientific and professional interest are: static and dynamic traffic assignment to road networks, simulation and management of public transport systems, travel demand and route choice models, city-logistics and network design, infomobility and intelligent transport systems, smart cities and mobility management, data analytics and machine learning in transportation.

He is author of 163 scientific publications mainly appeared in international journals, of 226 presentations and keynote speeches in conferences, of several software and of well-known algorithms for the simulation of transport networks. Among these LUCE and TRE, that are also included into the platform VISUM, Optima and HyperPath that are the backbone of the many Traffic Control Rooms built by PTV and SISTeMA all over the world, and the suite Mobility Manager.

Since 2021 he is the Coordinator of the PhD program in Transport and Infrastructures at Sapienza with more than 30 students. Since 2012 he is Associated Editor of Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics, published by Taylor & Francis. Form 2011 to 2023 he has been Editor of the EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics, published by Springer. From 2012 to 2015 he has been Chair of the Cost Action: Modelling public transport passengers in the era of ITS, were more than 100 researchers from all continents have been involved. From 2016 to 2023 he has been President of the PTV Scientific Advisory Board. 

His objective is to create methodological and technological innovation in the field of mobility for the environmental, economic and social sustainability of transportation.

Guido Gentile è Professore di Ingegneria dei Trasporti presso il DICEA de La Sapienza Università di Roma dal 2006, dove insegna Transport Modeling and Planning. Egli è anche direttore della Ricerca e dell’Innovazione di SISTeMA srl; la società, da lui co-fondata nel 2009 come spin-off universitario, fa oggi parte di PTV Group, conta più di 50 dipendenti ed è leader nello sviluppo software per gli Intelligent Transport Systems.

Nato nel 1971 a Roma, dove si è laureato in Ingegneria Civile cum laude nel 1996, ha conseguito un Master in Finanza Aziendale presso la LUISS nel 1996 e un Dottorato in Ingegneria dei Trasporti presso La Sapienza nel 2000. E’ iscritto dal 1996 all’Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Roma. E’ abilitato (ASN) come Professore Ordinario di Ingegneria dei Trasporti (2012) e di Ricerca Operativa (2016).

I suoi principali campi di interesse scientifico e professionale sono: l’assegnazione statica e dinamica alle reti stradali, la simulazione e la gestione dei sistemi di trasporto collettivo, i modelli di domanda e di scelta del percorso, la city logistica e il progetto di rete, l’infomobilità e i sistemi di trasporto intelligenti, le smart cities e il mobility management, data analytics e machine learning per i trasporti.

E’ autore di 163 pubblicazioni scientifiche in gran parte apparse su riviste internazionali, di 226 presentazioni in convegni e keynote speech, nonché di numerosi software e di noti algoritmi per la simulazione delle reti di trasporto. Tra questi LUCE e TRE, che sono inclusi nel pacchetto VISUM, OPTIMA e HyperPath, che costituiscono il cuore pulsante delle molte centrali del traffico realizzate da PTV e SISTeMA in tutto il mondo, oltre alla suite Mobility Manager.

Dal 2021 è Coordinatore del Dottorato di Ricerca in Infrastrutture e Trasporti della Sapienza con più di 30 studenti. Dal 2012 è Associated Editor della rivista Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics, pubblicata da Taylor & Francis. Dal 2011 al 2023 è stato Editor della rivista EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics, pubblicata da Springer. Dal 2012 al 2015 è stato Chair della Cost Action: Modelling public transport passengers in the era of ITS, che ha coinvolto oltre 100 ricercatori provenienti da tutti i continenti. Dal 2016 al 2023 è stato Presidente del PTV Scientific Advisory Board.

Il suo obbiettivo è creare innovazione metodologica e tecnologica nel campo della mobilità per la sostenibilità ambientale, economica e sociale dei trasporti.
